Despite its proximity to an international airport Stansted Mountfitchet is actually a peaceful village with many lovely rural walks.
Don’t be surprised to see the resident peacocks stopping traffic as they meander their way through the streets. The train from London takes about 50 minutes and brings you into the heart of the village close to the restaurants, bars and pubs of Lower Street so is an ideal place to visit for those wanting to escape the city.

Mountfitchet Castle and Toy Museum
Mountfitchet Castle and Toy Museum is a fabulous day out for the whole family. The castle is the only wooden Moote and Bailey reconstruction on its original site anywhere in the world. It is a living history, hands-on and interactive experience stepping back in time to see what life would have been like in 1066 Norman England. There’s plenty of opportunities to feed the rescue animals on site and the House on the Hill Toy Museum has over 80,000 items on display making it an Aladdin’s cave of nostalgia. For the bravehearted a visit to the Haunted Manor is also recommended.
