Boxing Day Walks Around Uttlesford
After the whirlwind of Christmas Day, there’s something wonderfully grounding about pulling on your boots, stepping outside and breathing in the crisp winter air. A peaceful Boxing Day walk might be just what you need.
Whether you’re walking off the mince pies or simply craving some fresh air, here are some of our favourite local routes to explore.

Saffron Walden Country and Town Walk (6.7 miles)
This circular route starts and finishes in Saffron Walden and combines rolling countryside with an introductory stroll through the historic town centre. It’s ideal if you want to really stretch your legs without straying too far from local amenities.
Highlights
• Pass by many of Saffron Walden’s historic spaces such as Bridge End Garden, the King Edward VI Armshouses and the Market Square.
• Appreciate beautiful views over the historic Audley End Estate, including the estate walls and the grand mansion.

Newport to Audley End (3.5 miles)
A lovely option if you like the idea of walking from station to station. Running between Newport and Audley End Stations, this route takes you through the historic villages of Newport and Wendens Ambo along the way, passing two churches and many other interesting buildings. Be prepared for plenty of stops to take it all in!
Highlights
• Admire a rich mixture of historic buildings along the streets of Newport and Wendens Ambo; including a 15th-century barn, former coaching inn and the medieval churches of St Mary’s.
• Many lovely food and drink spots pop into. Why not try Kappa House, The Coach and Horses or The Bell Inn?
• Close to Audley End House — a perfect trip to take to extend your afternoon.

Great Dunmow Circular (3.0 miles)
Don’t fancy anything too rural? Explore Great Dunmow, one of Uttlesford’s most historic market towns. This walk takes you through the older parts of the town, rich in listed buildings and quirky heritage.
Highlights
• Pass by around half of Great Dunmow’s 250 listed buildings, including medieval hall houses, 17th‑ and 18th‑century cottages, Georgian shopfronts, and several Grade I and Grade II* landmarks.
•Explore the Doctor’s Pond (linked to the inventor of the lifeboat), along with the 18th‑century Town Lock‑up and the Maltings.

Henham Rural Walk (6.8 miles)
If you’re looking for a rural walk over flat ground, this may be the walk for you. It follows gravel tracks, passing through the quiet village of Henham and onto the remote Saxon church at Chickney, a real hidden gem.
Highlights
• Time to enjoy the character of Henham village, including its duck pond and historic cottages. Look out for the Henham Dragon!
• A visit to St Mary’s Church in Chickney, one of the oldest churches in Essex thought to date back to the late 10th or early 11th century.
• Take in the views of rural scenery with historic landmarks including the remnants of the old Thaxted–Elsenham railway line.
• The Cock Inn in Henham is perfect for a warm drink afterwards.

Hatfield Heath Circular (3.9 miles)
A simply charming walk around the Hatfield Heath area, taking in open heathland, quiet lanes and the character of this well‑loved village.
Highlights
• Explore Hatfield Heath village, including the War Memorial and several listed buildings such as 17th‑century cottages, the former miller’s house and the site of the old windmill.
• Pass by the WWII POW Camp 116, one of the best‑preserved prisoner‑of‑war camp sites in the UK, with surviving huts and brick buildings visible from the path.
• Links to long-distance trails including the Three Forests Way and Harcamlow Way, if you are looking to extend your wanders.

• Check the route description: The Hundred Parishes Society notes that paths can change, so always read the latest PDF and consider carrying an OS map.
• Dress for winter: Expect mud and cold! Boots, hats and gloves are a must!
• Plan your daylight: Winter days are short, so allow plenty of time to complete your route.
• Follow the Countryside Code: Respect paths, wildlife and local residents.
• Support local: Many village pubs and cafés are open during the Christmas period… a perfect reward after your walk.
